Overview
Zero Waste by 2020
Recyclables and compostables are not allowed in the trash in San Francisco, which goes directly to a landfill. Materials in your blue bin are made into new bottles, cans, and other products. Food, soiled-paper and plants in your green bin are composted into nutrient-rich soil used by local farms.
Legislation

San Francisco’s Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance requires residents to separate their recyclables, compostables, and landfill trash. Find tools and resources to help you and your household compost and recycle so our city can reach zero waste.

San Francisco’s Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance requires everyone in San Francisco to separate their refuse into recyclables, compostables and landfill trash. Whether you work in a restaurant, hotel, office building, or anywhere in the city, San Francisco’s recycling and compost collection program is available.

The City and County of San Francisco has a Construction and Demolition Ordinance that requires maximum recycling and reuse of construction and demolition (C&D) debris material.

Every event held in San Francisco is required to offer recycling and composting at the event. We offer special assistance and signage to help events comply with San Francisco’s Mandatory Composting and Recycling Ordinance.

San Francisco City and County employees are leaders in environmental protection and are helping achieve our goal of zero waste by 2020. We offer free tools to help our city employees prevent waste, reuse, recycle, compost, and buy green to conserve resources and save money.

The Mandatory Recycling and Composting Ordinance requires everyone in San Francisco – businesses, residents, and City employees – to keep recyclables and compostables out the landfill by recycling and composting everything possible. READ>

San Francisco Debris Box Rental Permitting and Disposal Information

What do I need to know about renting a dumpster in San Francisco?

All dumpsters require a permit.

The rental company will tell you whether or not a permitting fee is included in the rental charges.

There are limits to where you can place it.

If you are placing the dumpster in the road:

  • It must be parallel to the curb.
  • It can’t protrude more than 8 feet into the road.

If you are placing the dumpster on the sidewalk:

The rules are more relaxed when placing the dumpster on private property.

A minimum of 65% of C&D must be recycled.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) debris must be recycled at no less than a 65% rate. This rule doesn’t apply to small amounts of material less than 1 cubic yard, or property owners hauling the debris in their own vehicle.

Drop-off and pick-up have time constraints.

No debris boxes may be delivered or hauled away in residential areas between 6pm and 7am, so schedule delivery and pick-up within this time perameter.

Please do not place certain types of waste in the dumpster

There are a number of types of debris that should not be placed into a dumpster for environmental reasons. Federal law and California law regulate what’s allowed to be dumped at landfills and Bay Area disposal services are required to follow these regulations. These items should not be disposed of in the dumpster:

  • Hazardous waste around the house like cleaners, bleach, paint and other chemicals
  • Motor oil, antifreeze, and brake fluid
  • Fireworks and other explosives
  • Any flammable liquid
  • Sealed 55-gallon barrels
  • Scrap tires
  • Lead-acid batteries (e.g., car batteries)
  • Asbestos and any construction debris containing asbestos
  • Appliances that contain chemicals like refrigerators and air conditioners containing freon

If you have another type of debris that you are unsure about, ask your selected dumpster service if it should be avoided.
